Who Needs This Course?

Our Virginia DMV-approved 8-hour Driver Improvement Course may be appropriate for drivers who need to complete a driver improvement requirement or who choose to take the course voluntarily.
 

• Drivers under age 20 with certain traffic violations — Virginia DMV requires drivers to complete a Driver Improvement Clinic for certain qualifying traffic violations committed before age 20, including certain violations committed while under 18 and at ages 18 or 19.
   

• Drivers required by the Virginia DMV — The DMV may require you to complete an 8-hour Driver Improvement Clinic because of your driving record or certain traffic violations. For drivers age 18 and older, DMV requires a clinic when they accumulate 12 demerit points within 12 months or 18 points within 24 months. If 18 points are accumulated within 12 months or 24 points within 24 months, DMV will suspend the driving privilege for 90 days and require completion of a Driver Improvement Clinic before the privilege can be restored.
   

• Drivers required by a court — A court may order you to complete a Driver Improvement Clinic. If the court has also determined that you should receive safe-driving points, the required court documentation must be provided to the clinic.
   

*Court-Ordered Students: If your course is court-ordered, confirm that your court accepts online driver improvement clinics before enrolling.

• Drivers with a suspended driving privilege — In certain situations, completing a Driver Improvement Clinic is one of the requirements that must be satisfied before your driving privilege can be restored.
   

• Drivers taking the course for insurance purposes — Some drivers complete a Driver Improvement Clinic to pursue an insurance premium discount. Check with your insurance company to determine whether you qualify.
   

• Drivers taking the course voluntarily — Drivers may voluntarily complete an approved Driver Improvement Clinic and may be eligible to receive five safe-driving points under Virginia DMV rules.
